After a loooong and brutal winter the recent warm up is starting to make the water soft again. God bless Jesse, he's focused this week on getting his father in law's pond unfrozen so we could fish this afternoon. The sun was shining and the wind was howling, but we were determined to set a hook. I haven't caught a fish since November and I can't tell you how eager i've been to feel a tug on the other end of the line. I've spent hours in the back yard practicing with my baitcaster...pitching, flipping and casting to various spots in the snow. I'm JONESING for water...
So Kughn and I roll out to Jesse's after work and get started throwing senko's, spinnerbaits, crankbaits...constantly switching colors and retrieves. Eventually I put on an 1/8oz jig with a wooley trailer and was fishing it slooooow. I felt the boompboomp and set the hook with my eyes closed. "I think i have a fish on guys! Yep, it's a fish!" I swung it on the bank right as the jig came out of his mouth
That's a skinny little dude, i'm sure he thought his first meal of the winter was a nice big fat wounded baitfish...but alas, it was Angler of the Year...
We started casting live bait because it was so windy. I quickly hooked up with an even bigger bass, still most likely in the 2lb range
The wind was so bad Jesse and I went away from throwing anything but bacon and chicken livers. We missed several fish either setting the hook too soon out of anticipation, or setting the hook too hard out of desperation. Jesse eventually hooked up with a big ass channel cat and I was able to land it in the net. The crowd goes wild!!!
What a great way to start the year...It was so awesome to get out and use the new rods and reels I've accumulated over the winter. I'll do a seperate post soon about how the game will be elevated in 2011...but i at least wanted to get the blog updated with today's events before i got to lazy to do it. 2011 is off to a terrific start!!! FISH ON!!!!!!!!
